Autumn rendezvous: session journal 50

Your outfit is the one thing in a shoot you control completely. The light is not.

Nine times out of ten clients ask us this before the session. The short answer: dress for the setting, not for the trend. The long answer is below.

01 — Start from the setting

If you are shooting in Tam Coc, the palette around you is limestone grey-blue and young-rice green. An ivory or beige dress will stand out from it. A mint dress will melt into it.

02 — A three-tone palette

Choose one main tone, one supporting tone and one small accent. Three is enough. Four or more and the viewer’s eye does not know where to rest.

If you keep only one rule: never let the outfit compete with the face.

03 — Fabric matters more than cut

Fabrics with drape — silk, chiffon, soft linen — catch the wind and create movement. Stiff fabric stands still and the photo looks like an ID card. If there is a breeze that day we always ask for ten extra minutes just to catch a flying hem.

04 — Three common mistakes

Large logos on a shirt, fine checks that cause moiré, and brand-new shoes you have never worn. The third sounds small but ruins entire location shoots.
